Horse Talk

The common bond I share with you is a love for horses. I have been riding, owning and training horses for over 25 years! When I look back at the beginning of my career I often think about how great it would have been to have access to the world through the internet. There is so much we can learn through each other. This is why this site was created. I want to reach my fellow horse-lovers and open a gateway of communication so we can all learn from each other. I don't want this to be too formal, I just want you to enjoy the site and take away from it as much as you can. There is a lot of published material available to you, but here I will let you be the writers!

I have set up an area for you to ask me questions concerning your beloved four-legged friends and also a section where you can post classified ads free of charge. So, look around and enjoy. I look forward to providing guidance and support for you and your horses!

Horse and Equestrian Question and Answer

Questions 1 to 5 of 1295

Q:

where would you get english horse riding boots

A:

You can go to any tack shop in your local area or you can get catalogs from places like Dover, Stateline, Liberty Valley, SmartPak, etc. Happy shopping.

Q:

what does washy mean?

A:

This is a term in the racing world for when a horse breaks out in a nervous sweat before a race, sometimes to the point of dripping from his belly.

Q:

how much weight can the average horse withstand for a long ride????

A:

Usually you can plan on having a horse carry about 1/5 its weight. Therefore, if you have a 1,000 lb horse then he can carry about 200lbs comfortably.

Q:

How many acres should you have to house a horse?

A:

You need to check the zoning laws in your area because they vary in different states and towns. However, to be most comfortable you should plan on at least one-half to one acre per horse.

Q:

I have a 11yr old morgan/walker she only 13h I would like to train her to pull is she to old to train.and were would i fine a harness to fit her a pony is to small and a horse is to big and how would i start her

A:

She is not too old to train to pull, but I would highly recommend going and taking some lessons in driving yourself or sending her to a trainer to get her started. Usually you start with long lining and then start to put on the rig, but a trainer would be more helpful if you have problems. As far as harness fit, it seems hard to believe pony stuff does not fit her if she is only 13h, but if this is the case you need to find a harness in cob size or ask harness shops for small horse sizes.
